Apple TV+ has set a June 5 premiere for its new thriller series Cape Fear, dropping the first two episodes on that date. The 10-episode show stars Javier Bardem as the dangerous Max Cady, who targets attorneys Amanda and Steve Bowden, played by Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson. It pulls from John D. MacDonald’s 1957 novel The Executioners and the film versions that followed, putting a fresh spin on the tale of revenge and fear.

Background

The story of Cape Fear started with John D. MacDonald’s book The Executioners, published in 1957. That novel led to a 1962 film with Gregory Peck playing the lawyer facing off against a released convict. Then came Martin Scorsese’s 1991 remake, where Robert De Niro took on the role of Max Cady, the tattooed killer out for payback against lawyer Sam Bowden, played by Nick Nolte.

Those movies built a lasting image of a man driven by rage after years behind bars. The new series keeps the core idea but shifts some details. In the book, only the husband is a lawyer. Here, both Amanda and Steve Bowden work as attorneys, making the threat hit closer to home for the couple.

Development kicked off when Nick Antosca, a lifelong fan of the films, pitched the idea to Universal. He worked through his deal at Universal Content Productions with Amblin Television. The project shopped around and landed at Apple TV+ in April 2024. Apple gave it the green light in November 2024, right after casting Javier Bardem as Max Cady.

Amy Adams joined in February 2025 to play Amanda Bowden, also signing on as an executive producer. Patrick Wilson came aboard around the same time as Steve Bowden. The cast grew from there. CCH Pounder added her name in April 2025. Then in May, Anna Baryshnikov, Jamie Hector, Clara Wong, Lily Collias, Joe Anders, and Malia Pyles signed up.

By September 2025, Ron Perlman, Ted Levine, and Margarita Levieva joined, with Levieva stepping in for Wong’s role. Patrick Fischler rounded out a recurring spot in October 2025. Production started filming in Atlanta on April 30, 2025, and wrapped up on October 15, 2025. Morten Tyldum came on to direct the pilot and executive produce.

Heavy hitters back the show. Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese executive produce, linking back to the 1991 film Spielberg produced. Antosca writes and runs the show, teamed with Alex Hedlund under their Eat the Cat banner. Daryl Frank and Justin Falvey join from Amblin. It all comes from UCP, part of Universal Studio Group.

Key Details

Javier Bardem plays Max Cady, the serial killer fresh out of prison with a grudge against the Bowdens. He won an Oscar for No Country for Old Men and brings that intensity to this role. Bardem also executive produces.

Amy Adams stars as Amanda Bowden, the attorney whose past catches up in brutal ways. Known from Enchanted and American Hustle, she too executive produces. Patrick Wilson is Steve Bowden, Amanda’s husband and fellow lawyer. The family dynamic amps up the stakes as Cady closes in.

Cast Additions and Production Notes

The supporting cast fills out a tense world. CCH Pounder brings her experience from shows like The Shield. Ron Perlman and Ted Levine add grit, while newer faces like Malia Pyles and Anna Baryshnikov round out the ensemble. Filming in Atlanta gave the production a real Southern feel, matching the story’s humid, oppressive atmosphere from the original novel.

The series runs 10 episodes, described as a Hitchcock-style thriller. It digs into America’s true crime fixation today, with podcasts and documentaries everywhere. A storm brews for the Bowdens as Cady stalks them, forcing questions about justice, guilt, and survival.

"The series is a tense, Hitchcockian thriller and an examination of America’s obsession with true crime in the 21st century." – Apple TV+ announcement

No trailer has dropped yet, but with production wrapped, one could come soon. Apple TV+ streams the show, available on devices worldwide for subscribers.

What This Means

Cape Fear arrives at a time when true crime stories dominate screens. Viewers binge shows about killers and survivors, blurring lines between fact and drama. This series taps that by updating a classic revenge plot for now, where social media and news cycles fuel obsessions.

For Apple TV+, it bolsters a lineup with hits like Masters of the Air. Pairing Spielberg and Scorsese with Bardem and Adams draws big audiences. The June 5 start with two episodes hooks viewers right away, a common tactic for limited series.

Fans of the original films get a new take that promises to push further, as cast members have hinted. Patrick Wilson noted the show explores deeper territory than Scorsese’s version. With both Bowdens as lawyers, the threat feels shared, testing their marriage and careers.

Bardem’s Cady stands out as a modern menace, tattooed and unhinged like De Niro’s but shaped by today’s world. Adams’ Amanda shifts the focus to a strong female lead in a genre often male-driven. The full cast mix of veterans and rising stars promises layered performances.

Production wrapping last October means post-work focused on editing and sound to build suspense. Atlanta’s locations add authenticity to scenes of pursuit and hiding. As premiere nears, it positions Apple against streamers chasing thriller fans.

The story’s roots in a 1957 book show how timeless the fear of a past mistake haunting you remains. In 2026, with true crime everywhere, Cape Fear lands perfectly, offering scares grounded in real human flaws.
